Fast foods, popular among the city dwellers, carry less nutritional value and these cause obesity problems among children, according to an expert, reports UNB.

"Those taking junk foods - burgers, chips and other fast foods - are found suffering from malnutrition," Director of the Institute of Public Health Nutrition (IPHN) Dr Fatima Parveen Chowdhury, told the news agency.

She stressed the need for creating mass awareness about the nutritious dietary items through dissemination of information and home-education.

Dr Chowdhury said: "There is nothing but carbohydrates in burgers and potato chips although the urban people are vastly inclined to taking these items."

She added: "Malnutrition can't be removed overnight…every infant up to six months should be breast-fed, which can protect babies from malnutrition."

The IPHN director said homemade balanced diet for children, particularly over six months to two years, could ensure intake of nutrition for proper growth of children.
